En 1904 eut lieu une exposition au pavillon de Marsan et à la Bibliothèque nationale de Paris sur les Primitifs français. Le présent ouvrage, publié à l'occasion du 100e anniversaire de cette manifestation, retrace l'histoire de cette redécouverte et nous fournit l'état le plus récent des connaissances, sur les foyers artistiques tels que Paris ou la Provence. Ce catalogue montre comment l'histoire de l'art, sans cesse réécrite, tente de cerner la personnalité de ces maîtres au génie protéiforme qui, tout en se réclamant des expériences conduites en Italie et aux Pays-Bas, sont parvenus à forger un style d'une puissante originalité.
